His mother had once said to him, Choose your friends with care. Swimming in the heavy sea of memory, he thinks, but there must be an answer. He could have been an actor, but he was not. He was fascinated by emotion and all the ways it could be falsely induced. He went to the theater as often as possible. This epiphany-occurred early in his life and changed him forever. Once one has stared death in the face, one comes away both with one’s reality shattered and with it automatically reconstructed along different lines. Seen from a distance, the entire entrance was made up to resemble the inner pedals of an enormous orchid or, if one’s mind ran to such images, a woman’s sexual organ.Īt the point of death, he had learned, everything is possible. Here are some of the lines that captured me in this continuing saga of love, revenge, crime, suspense (with a lot of Japanese martial arts mysticism): I’m anxious to start book four, THE KAISHO (published in 1993). THE WHITE NINJA was just as suspenseful as the first two books. I always come away with insight of all sorts from Van Lustbader’s writings. The first book, THE NINJA, was published in 1980 the second, THE MIKO, in 1984. This is the third ((published in 1990) of the six-book series about Nicholas Linnear, The Ninja. ![]() ![]() ![]() I will caution that the wonder of this book might also be its potential downfall for some readers. Fans of Anne Rice and other similar brooding vampires will most certainly enjoy the tour de force through the unsettled mind of this undead creature. Nestled deep within their cerebral cortex, you are forced to experience every bit of anguish, confusion, and despair that he does. Normally one feels like they’re sitting right behind the main character’s eyes. While first person POV isn’t uncommon, it is rare to find a story that delves so deep into it. The story unfolds quite literally through the eyes, ears, and other senses of the main undead antagonist. Told in first person narrative, this story paints a picture of vivid imagery coupled with heavy metaphor. If you’re a fan of Francis Ford Coppola’s movie rendition of Bram Stoker’s Dracula then Endless Hunger will be very appealing to you. While I normally refrain from diving into a new work while I’m in the middle of writing one of my own, the concept of the book intrigued me. Knowing that I have a slight penchant for things vampiric, Narcisse Navarre (say that three times fast, I dare you :) asked if I might be interested in taking a look at her brand new novella, Endless Hunger. What this says about me, well I’ll let future psychoanalysts debate that. It is a comfort, much like a cold slice of apple pie (yes, I said cold. ![]() ![]() It deploys Achille Mbembe’s concept of “the becoming black of the world” to investigate the construction of “posthuman” races through technological advances in Ishiguro’s technologized world. This essay locates the novel in a flux of debates around the nexus between capitalism, race, artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, and environmental change. ![]() Like the deployment of black bodies as dehumanized raw materials in plantation economies, the exploitation of the androids in Ishiguro’s novel is premised, I contend, on their exclusion from the category of the “human.” The ethics of such a network of production, consumption, and disposal are hardly ever called into question in the dystopian world of the novel. As this essay argues, a disturbing historical parallel to the position of the AFs in the social hierarchy is that of slaves. In Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun (2021), Klara is an AF (Artificial Friend), one among a range of humanoid automatons manufactured with the objective of keeping affluent, genetically augmented teenagers company. ![]() |
